Kranji

A sanctuary of peaceful silence
amidst a bustling city,
a retreat from material views
to where the spirit reigns.

The whitewashed gate beckons one
to enter into a realm of peace,
of green grass and birdsong
and fields of living stone.

Look at the stones.
They each have a story to tell
of the dreams of a time past
before it all ended.

A journal of life and death
for so it is,
this very site of peace
which commemorates the deaths of war.

What does one think, when one sees
the name of one Christian solder,
and his departure through violent means
of a family full of love?

And that one there, that one has
died without a name, but 'Known Unto God'.
God knows thee, but the grief of your family,
they do not know where you lie.

At another place, one not of the Christian God,
yet honoured amongst his kind.
What did you think, son of the soil,
at the moment of your immolation?

And the little gravestone of a little child
who lived for short, suffering days.
A victim of desperate circumstances,
An angel who returned too quick to the Maker.

And the names, carved on the walls,
of the church of those passed on.
Each one a life, a hope, a dream,
all gone, gone with the wind.

And the special place reserved for those
who were committed to fire.
May they rest in the peace
denied at their moment.

A sanctuary of peace this is. Yet
it is the story of a people's lifetime,
of death, destruction, and despair,
but yet of life, dreams, and hope.

I take my leave. The voices of those dead
follow my fading trail,
saying without words, yet in one voice,
"No more. Never again."

The Story Ends Here

Our story ended here
today.
There will be no more episodes,
no more scenes.
For we have been parted,
and cruelly so.
But life pays us no heed,
and so it goes on uncaring.

Never again shall we share
times we've always taken for granted.
No more is the identity
that binds us as one.
Grief has taken over
and our world is colored with grey.
But time pays us no respect,
and with haste pushes us along.

The future seems so bleak
and we are torn apart.
Friendships, though everlasting,
will be stretched beyond repair.
Memories, though forever,
will fade away slowly.
And the story about us
will one day be no more.

Yet despair not, for although we may scatter
like grains of sand in the wind,
Yet fading memories may still be beautiful,
and friendships may never end.
For isn't the memories of good times,
and friendships potent seeds?
That will one day grow the crops
of the bonds of tomorrow.

When We Were Young

Looking back after so many years,
At the times we had before,
Our joys, our pains, and all our tears,
Now they seem so far away.

Now that we've grown up and moved on,
Chosen our own paths on the journey of life,
Do you remember our common bond,
So long ago, yet it still feels like yesterday.

Do you remember, when we were young,
The things we've said, the things we've done,
Together, forever as one,
Now, we meet again today.

Now, we see that we have changed,
No more the young guns that we were,
But yet, we may be no longer young,
The memories we still hold dear.

For you my friends, i hold a toast,
For the times when we were young.

Tired

Tired.
Really tired.
Tired of life,
tired of the world.
Tired of school,
tired of it all.
Tired of my family,
same thing of my friends.
Just tired.
Really tired.

Tired.
Damned tired.
Tired of enmity,
tired of hatred.
Tired of jealousy,
Tired of my rage.
Tired of being mad,
being mad at the world.
Just tired.
Really tired.

Sleep.
Just want to sleep.
Sleep off the sadness,
Sleep off the pain.
Sleep off the day,
Sleep it all off.
Sleep off the heartburn,
of another bad day.
Just sleep.
Really sleep.

Forget.
Just want to forget.
Forget my troubles,
Forget my woes.
Forget my pains,
Forget it all.
Forget the trauma,
of another chapter of pain.
Just forget.
Really forget.

Cry.
Just want to cry.
Cry away my fears,
Cry away my problems.
Cry away my concerns,
Cry it all away.
Cry away the memories,
of another period of depression.
Just cry.
Really cry.

Tired.
Really tired.
Tired of life,
tired of the world.
Tired of school,
tired of it all.
Tired of my family,
same thing of my friends.
Just tired.
Really tired.

Defeated

Another one defeated,
Another one bites the dust.
Another one falls prey, to
Another one of life's trials.

Another one in the obituaries,
Another one to be buried.
Another one to be mourned, to
Another one of those last rites.

Another one who couldn't live on,
Another one who asked 'Why me?'
Another one who was beaten, to
Another one of those days.

Another one of those sad stories,
Another one of life's mistakes.
Another one whose life has prematurely ended, to
Another one who wanted to die anyway.

Why?

Lesson Unlearned

Met you as usual one Sunday afternoon,
You were crying most sadly ever so soon,
Said he's ditched you over the phone,
And now you're all alone.
I take you in my arms, trying to comfort,
Whispering condolences, and denouncing him as dirt,
And yet I can't help but think to myself,
Your lessons you left unlearned, you're not helping yourself.

Even as you sob, your face on my shoulder,
Oh, tempted was I to say how silly you were,
Questions I wanted to ask of you,
Why do you persist in love through and thorugh?
Why do you persist in loving in vain,
Getting fooled by players, again and again,
Onlt to suffer the agonies, the pain?
In the end, girl, you've nothing to gain.

Met you as usual one Sunday afternoon,
You were beaming most brightly as if you've had a boon,
Said you've found this nice guy one day,
Now you're going out with him anyway.
All i can do now is sigh all too late,
For what i know would be your inevitable fate,
And I wonder how I'll turn out, when I become a part,
Of the target list of Cupid, and thy accursed dart.

Parting

Still standing before
The point of no return.
Waiting to pass throughthe gateway,
That takes me from the last chapter
Of my story. Yet I tarry,
I'm still here, waiting
Waiting for you.
Are you coming?

Still can't forget
The last time we were together.
Can't forget those beautiful eyes,
That implored of me what despairing words
Couldn't convey. I'm sorry love,
i have no choice, i can
Only leave you.
Are you still mad?

Still remember
The love we've shared.
The thicks and thins we've been through,
That breaks my heart as I endure the effects
Of its demise. Yet I pine,
I want to say, again,
I love you.
Can you forgive me?

Still waiting here, before
The point where we will part.
Waiting to glimpse the vision
That will answer the desperate prayers
I've been praying. I'm waiting love,
Just want to see, and hear
And feel you once more.
Will you come before I'm gone forever?

Just let me see you
One last time
Before our parting.
Please.

Wasteland Of Broken Souls

We are all unique,
With talent and potential,
We are here to develop and grow.
Well, that's what they claim to do.

They lie.

The truth is, we are destined,
To conform to, the inhuman machine,
The Authorities, our personalities stripped,
Turned into mere machines, with the purpose of churning out results.

This is where we are.

And we are punished,
Anytime and everytime,
Always when we break imposed limits.
All, in the search for ourselves.

A Wasteland

That is where, we are shackled,
Transformed into, soulless automatons,
Can you hear us weep, our dreams sundered forever,
In our immortal pain, soundlessly wailing out the tortured cry

Of Broken Souls.

Seven Days Of The Prodigal Son

Seven Days Of The Prodigal Son

I got off the plane at 1 AM,
it was dark. Jet-lagged and needing a bath,
I stepped outside for a taxi,, and I am struck
by the humidity I used to know.
My kin don't know I am back. Just as well,
all theey would do is to drag me across a family reunion
like a prize trophy, and ask the questions
I don't want to answer.
On the trip to the hotel, the taxi driver regales me
in heartland language, how hard it is to make a living nowadays,
while I lie back, grunting out my politeness, while ruminating
on my mission, to rediscover the place where i lived out a quarter of my days.

Day 1. I was all dressed up
with nowhere to go. So I stepped aboard the MRT,
the buses, and went all around the homeland
I left behind so many years ago.
Everything and yet nothing has changed. Seems to me,
new buildings are still popping up like mushrooms while
the landmarks of my past, they have all disappeared in the
cycle of life and death.
The cars have multiplied in numbers, and so have
the empty, blank stares on both sides and across me,
victims of the rat race, the stress of making money, the
narrow-minded definition of success, I left to avoid facing.

Day 2. The brochures bade me visit
the attractions of home. Up to now not really knowing
the reasons for my return, I took up my trusty camera
and so indeed I did.
I went everyone the brochures led me. Orchard Road,
Suntec City and the Zoo, everywhere held pockets
of memories within a sea of change, yet nowhere could I find
The answers I am seeking.
Back at the hotel, I opened my treasure chest
of forgotten memories, and a face from my past popped out,
and in its wake, a slew of treasured moments, like
Pandora's box, reminding me of the days I knew you.

Day 3. The spirit that is you
is still haunting me. Restless and in need of answers,
I return to the site of our halcyon days, the school
that shaped my youth.
I came upon a wellspring of recollections. Among the young faces,
wearing the identity I once wore long ago, an old face
picked me out from within his own store of memories, and
sat me down for conversation.
We connected from old memories, my amnesia cured greatly,
by the release of my latent past, throught the therapy of sharing,
but still I am troubled, for I am still missing, the
essence of what I seek, and my old friend gave me the key.

Day 4. I was at the housing estate
where I was told you were. Unable to go up for some reason,
I hung around the void decks, observing the heartland
until I saw you once more.
Time has been cruel to you. A baby in one arm,
and lugging the day's groceries with a toddler in tow, you were
haggard and pale, with the same blank-eyed stare I saw so often, no longer
the bright-spirited girl I loved.
I was struck dumb, your photo numb in my hand with grief,
wanted so much to relive those days with you, but could I bear to see you in that state,
with your life in despair? I went away silently, you never knew
I was there, and perhaps it was better that way.

Day 5. I spent the whole day
with my army buddies. We have indeed changed much,
some were successful businessmen, while others
had become family men.
We relived those cavalier days over beer. The army stories,
the various exploits since we parted ways, the discussion
over family and career, the concern for me that I seem to be
amongst them, an underachiever.
I smiled off their good-natured jabs, but inside I didn't care,
why should I, when I've found the answers I wanted,
and ended up replacing my emptiness with anguish? We parted ways
with promises to reunite, I stayed to drown out my tears.

Day 6. I'm about to return to
where I came from. Yet I have no will for sightseeing,
so I spend half the day, lounging in the hotel bed
wallowing in everything I lost.
I went to Geyland to partake of the feast i missed. Roti prata,
chicken rice, curry fish head, indulging in the one thing
I remembered most fondly, the love of food I inherited
from my life here.
Another old face I see, behaving most promiscuously,
heading into a hotel with a man, and I despair,
is this all that remains of all I hold dear? I went back
to the hotel, and slept away my hangover.

Day 7. Today's the day I'm
leaving behind what I've known. I am packed and ready,
almost eager to leave this place, where my dearest memories
have been irreversible corrupted.
I spent the whole day writing this for you. By the time you get this, I'll be already gone from here,
crossing an ocean, back to the refuge where I hid
in exile from my roots.
Would you call me back? I am happy where I am,
but still I wish to relive our happiest days,
catch up on each other, become the best friends
we promised to remain, when you left me.

The Search For Myself

The Search For Myself

Wandering, driving through
the views and expectations of
society, the image imposed by
others, by myself.

They know me as this person
in their lives, the one who has
a certain impact upon them,
nothing more.

And that's everyone cares about,
what they see, for they do not realise
there's something else behind the superficiality,
more substantial and yet unknown.

Yet how can they be blamed, for
they also hide their inner spirit
both from others and themselves,
and they don't even know it.

We are all cursed.
Until we find our way.

Infinity

Infinity

A chapter of our lives just
passed us by today.
Another of our experiences
consigned to history.

Our loss we shall feel
very soon.
Our last hurrah we have
already cheered.

We shall feel this sadness
the more keenly with each day,
Yet be not sad, my angels,
Be not sad.

Our endeavours may have ended
Together as one,
But our story will endure
for infinity.

Dust Angels

Dust Angels

Walking back after a hard day,
another cruel, senseless ordeal,
Back to a house of conflicts,
of screaming, shouting, crying.

And kicking up the dust
that lies along the path,
the path that lies between
both sides of unhappiness.

Look at the dust, floating all around
like angels that rise up from the ashes,
to comfort those in need of faith,
before vanishing into the earth.

And when was the last time that
peace was all that mattered?
No more conflict. No more strife.
No more feeling lost.

Enough. No more.
Back to the everyday toil life has become.

Deviant Angel

Deviant Angel
(dedicated to "Zoe", a 14-year-old interviewed in The Sunday Times 04/04/04)

Dark, the seedy room
of a Hotel 81, contaminated
with post-coital odours, while a girl
lies crying besides a snoring man.

Tender arms crisscrossed
with scars and track marks,
each one telling a sad story
of abuse, despair, neglect.

She neverknew any father.
Mother is always beating her,
her boyfriend hurt her real bad,
too horrible for words.

Dropped out of school at
age 12, why stay on anyway?
It's no use, nothing can drag her
out of this hellhole.

Coke, grass, ice, beer, glue.
The keys to another unreality.
They have it all, so that
it would not hurt anymore.

And the vulgar arms of strange
men, night after endless night,
each one a poor substitute
for the love that is absent.

Yet...... hope endures.
Maybe there would be someone
who truly loves her, to lead her,
a deviant angel, out of the darkness.

But dream as dream does,
for now, all she can do
is to run, as far as she can,
away from everything, anything.

Death Of Youth

Death Of Youth

Cramming for yet
another nameless, faceless paper
that has to be passed
Or else.
All hopes hinge on tomorrow,
Succeed and face another higher trial
Or fail and crash into deepest oblivion,
No questions asked.

Is this what it is all about?
To produce only what society demands
and be dragged up another level
Or down?
To be just another number,
surrounded by mere figures,
inserted into a sea of statistics
To fill in the gaps?

And then to settle into staidness
and concentrate on minute details,
cash career maybe family,
Or not.
Forgetting that spark of youthful ambition
that could have grown to blaze a trail of fire,
stand out in history and die down to leave
An indelible mark.

Is it come to this?
That soaring hope has to give way
for the feel of concrete under feet
Or nothing?
To refrain from carving out a destiny,
for the chance to fly an ordinary pitch,
all because of the fear of crashing to
An ignominous end?

Is it thus our fate, to exist in
The City Where Dreams Die?

Dear Diary

Dear Diary
(taken from the diary of a kid who committed suicide 3 days ago)

Dear diary,
today was the first day of school,
and nobody saw me, heard me,
it's like I wasn't there.
Mummy said it would be different,
she lied. It was the same thing
all over again, nobody cared
that I was there.

Dear diary,
it's been 3 months, and
everything has totally changed
for the worse.
Everyone has grouped themselves
in their cliques, and they've locked me out,
leaving me isolated, left me
drifting in limbo.

Dear diary,
they mocked me today, once
again. They said that my life story
is but a joke.
I do not understand,
why must they do this
to me, what have I ever
done to them?

Dear diary,
Daddy punished me for my results
today. He said that I was a disgrace
to the family.
Mummy was crying, she was
wailing what did she do to deserve
me. Diary, I've treid my best,
why don't they care?

Dear diary,
Teacher made Mummy and Daddy
send me for counselling, said that i'll
amount to nothing at this rate.
They are insulting me again,
said I'm good for nothing
at all. Diary, tell me, why does
nobody love me?

Dear diary,
I'm studying as hard as I
know how, I swear I won't let
Mummy or Daddy down.
Everyone's still calling me
a good-for-nothing, but I'll
show them, I can be better, I
can do it.

Dear diary,
I've failed my aim, Daddy's
angry again, they are laughing at me
again, once more.
I can't take it anymore, I
did my best, why can't they
see that, why don't they
care about me?

Dear diary
I've lost all hope, I'll go
to school today, but I'm not coming
home, won't see anyone anymore.
Diary, do me a favour,
ask Mummy and Daddy, ask
Teacher, ask all of them
just one question.

Why?
